Top Four Scariest Japanese Horror Visual Novels

Ever wondered what Japanese readers consider to be the scariest visual novels you can read right now? Well, wonder no more! Goo Rankings recently polled visitors, and here is their ranking for the most horrifying visual novels you should start reading right now!

4. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hou EG THE BEST (x)

This is basically just a collection of all the arcs the date, so it’s a great place to start if you’ve never read any of the originals or if you’ve only seen the anime and are looking for a good place to dive in!

3. Raging Loop (x)

“Immerse yourself in a thrilling psychological horror story taking place in the secluded Japanese village of Yasumizu. A heavy mist surrounds the place, preventing everyone from ever leaving. Ancient gods have come back to hunt the villagers down one by one. The feast has begun, can you escape the village alive?”

This visual novel is a little different in that each time you die, you come back and use that knowledge to try to uncover the murder-mystery. A thinking-man’s visual novel, if you will, but with werewolves and Japanese folklore!

2. Kamaitachi no Yoru: Rinne Saisei (x)

This game remakes the original that was released in 1994, but for the PS Vita! It also features new scenarios, including one written by Higurashi’s creator Ryukishi07 himself!

1. Shin Hayarigami 1-2 (x)

Come in at number one, the infamous Shin Hayarigami! These still don’t seem to have full official English translations at this point, but for the Japanese audience, these urban legend games that like to shock with sudden grotesque images are, by many, considered to be some of the scariest visual novels of all time!
