As I was walking down the street one night, I heard some knocking coming from somewhere.

I thought I was just hearing things, but the sound kept repeating. When I stopped to figure out where it was coming from, the sound got even more intense.

“Hey, you can hear me, right? Hey.”

This time, I heard a low voice.

At that, I understood where it was coming from.

It was coming from the manhole cover.

“Hey, somebody’s there, right? Open this for me. Hey. Hey.”

I didn’t move.

The knocking got louder, contrasting harshly with the coaxing voice. It seemed to be getting more and more annoyed.

Finally…

“Hey, you fuck, I said open up!”

There was a sharp kicking sound, and then everything fell quiet.
