I was on my way home from the shops when a ball in a children’s sandpit caught my eye. It was brand new, and bright yellow in colour. The park was part of a nearby apartment complex, so it must have belonged to one of the children there. I debated whether I should leave it be or take it to someone to look after when it happened.
Two hands suddenly popped out of the sand. They were small, that of a child. They grabbed the ball gently and then sank smoothly back in, the ball with them.
They must have realised they’d left the ball behind and in a panic came back for it, I thought.
